Weekend Recap 6/15 – 6/17

Hi everyone! How was your weekend? I can’t believe somehow Monday slipped by me and now we are closing in on Tuesday evening. Friday night was spent over at Jonny and Julie’s place for an impromptu bar-b-que at their place. It was mostly spent noshing on chips and watching the guys play Donkey Kong and Street Fighter on the Nintendo 64. I tried my hand at Street Fighter, which I have only ever played in the arcade because I never had a 64, and was accused of button mashing. Talk about a sore loser! 😛

After catching up on some much needed z’s, and a little Minecraftin’ I headed over to Tim and Lauren’s place for lunch and hang out time. After debating quite a bit about where to eat, mostly because I am not an adventurous eater, we settled on a place called Bowl & Ramen in Sacramento. I used to live near the area but had never eaten there before. Let me just say again that I am not an adventurous eater, so it took me a couple of reads of the menu before settling on something that I figured would be relatively safe to order. I ended up ordering Tteok-bokki + Gunmandu 떡볶이+군만두 (Rice cake simmered in spicy sauce and fried dumplings ) which is pictured above and below. I was not expecting the rice cakes to be so large (maybe about the size of a nickel in diameter?) but they were extremely good. They had a similar consistency to mochi, which I’m not really a fan of, but it was not nearly as gummy. The general consensus was that I ordered the best dish of the afternoon, because what meal is not complete by sampling each others food? I would definitely go back again and have this tasty dish.

After saving a little room for dessert, at least thinking I did, we were off to a European bakery that I had never been to before called Ettore’s. We made a slight detour before and stopped a local pet store so Lauren and Tim could check out the cats. They are looking to get a little brother or sister for their lovebug Xena. After prying the cats out of Lauren’s hands we were off! I must admit, it was hard to not take one of those cute kitties home, but alas, I already have 2 at my Mom’s place and my current living situation would not be conducive to bringing in a furry feline friend. When we walked into Ettore’s, the place was packed. I was like a kid in a candy store with all of the delicious looking confectioneries they had. It was downright cruel to be made to choose just an item or two. Tim picked up a handful of lemon macarons and a pistachio macaron – not a macaroon! – Lauren picked up a piece of the raspberry crumb cake, I picked up a black on white fudge truffle type thing, a chocolate macaron, and a milk chocolate and white chocolate chip cookie, and we got a small salted chocolate caramel tart to split. We all had a our respective plates and tasted each others treats, all of which were divine. I was ready to call uncle when we got to the salted chocolate caramel tart because I was way past full, but how could I pass that luscious beauty up. It was honestly a little slice of heaven, and I’m glad it was only one forkful, as it put me over the top.

We somehow managed to make it back to the car without wheelchairs and vegged out on the couch to play some Xbox 360. We started off by playing some Scott Pilgrim where I noticed a subliminal Continue? and also a cool toy for me that I will be sharing on Thursday! After that we hit Mel’s diner and had dinner. I was still extremely full from my lunch with Tim and Lauren so I had a scoop of ice cream and french fries – totally healthy, right?!

I spent most of the day Sunday in bed playing Minecraft and half watching the new season of The Office. After Richard got off work we hit A-1 comics where I managed to buy not a single thing, and then the Sunday ritual of pizza (not spaghetti like last week!) at Celestino’s and Asylum.

Toy Thursday

20120615-170619.jpg

Hello hello! It’s Thursday so you know what that means – one more day until the weekend! Wait.. or toys, or both! All of these were recently added to my collection, so let’s get started!

Starting at the top left, we have my brand new (to me) Ron English Rabbbit figure! I have been eyeing this since the first time I stepped foot in Toy Fusion and finally broke down and bought it this past weekend. I absolutely love his style and who could not love this little blue fella? I was surprised to find that it is a hollow figure, which makes me less leery of putting it ontop of my toy display – as its only about 3 inches or so wide. Bonus footage! Check out Techno Kitten on the Xbox 360 (epileptics beware, this game truly is almost seizure inducing) to see some of his work! And play one of the most frustrating games ever.

Next we have my fancy new Organ Donor figure. This figure is a bit taller than the rest of my blind boxes at about 3.5 inches tall. I honestly have never even seen these before, my awesome friend Jeff was nice enough to send me one. I opened the package to find a lovely set of kidneys staring me in the face. Original concept created by David Foox, there are 24 variants to this series which came out in 2009 or so which include various body parts such as eyes, brains, livers, lungs, etc. This series of figures was also created on the premise of raising awareness about organ donation. Kind of a nifty deal. I also super like that the backside of the toy has its little buttcheeks showing, as I’m sure anyone who has donned a hospital gown can feel that pain.

Top right corner we have a figure from the BoOoya series by Kid Robot that came out in 2009. This dainty little guy is an awesome addition to my collection, and some how this series slipped right past my radar, my guess is because I didn’t start heavily collecting until about a year later. His hook hand is my favorite part and if it wasn’t completely awkward I would probably carry him around in my pocket.

Bottom left and middle we have a few figures from the Pop! series from Kid Robot. These are new to my collection, but I have quite a few other pieces. I occasionally pop into Urban Outfitters when I hit the mall and happened to find these guys on sale ontop of the clearance price, making them just a dollar a piece. What a steal! I picked up 5, despite my brain telling me to just grab the entire lot full that they had. Fortunately combined with my existing collection, I did not receive any doubles, what are the chances? My guess is because of the previous article I wrote about doubles in blind box toys. Toy karma to the max!

And last but not least, we have two figures from the new Disney Vinylmation 25th Anniversary series that just hit stores. I am a total sucker for clear vinyl, and glitter, because I am a girl and we like shiny things. Let me rephrase that, I am human and we like shiny things. I picked up two just to check them out. There is also a Mickey open box figure that comes with a light up base that you can interchange between the figures that will make them glow. Pretty fancy, but as many die hard Disney fans will choke and die, I’m not a huge Mickey fan. I wish they sold the base separately. The Mickey I received in the blind box is different from the open box figure. There are only a couple figures in this series that I really want, the first being the Tinkerbell one, and the second being the chaser figure which is the hippo ballerina from Fantasia. I am sure I will probably pick up a few more before the series is discontinued or maybe I’ll get lucky and trade a couple of my doubles for something from the series at the Disney store.

Weekend Recap 6/8 – 6/10

This weeks weekend recap is brought to you by the letter P and the number 3. I have never been to a midnight movie showing. Richard, James, his sister (who’s name escapes me currently), and I went to see Prometheus Thursday night/Friday morning. Wait. Let me back up. I had planned on taking a nap prior to going to see Prometheus because I am old and I was at a show late the night prior. LMFAO to be exact, and lets just get this straight, I was there as medical staff. After I downed half a pint of Late Night Snack ice cream by Ben & Jerry’s, I met up with Richard and Jonny for a little bit of geocaching. Sadly our first attempt at a find was a bust, but we snagged two more before Jonny had to leave and pick up his wife from work. This brings my official count up to 537 finds. Next month my friend Dawn and I are planning a 100 finds in a day extravaganza. We all parted ways and reconvened at Jonny’s place for some hang outs and Call of Duty a couple of hours later. After that we finally met up with James and his sister. We arrived at the theater rather early, just in case the line was long, and surprisingly they were already allowing seating in the theater.

I have mixed feelings about seeing movies in the theater. It never fails that I am stuck in front of some rude jackass that likes to put their feet on the back of my seat or kick the back, or the idiot that insists on talking the entire time. But on the flipside, there is something about enjoying a good movie in a theater. I think there was an entire high school class seated in front of us. I honestly don’t recall being so annoying when I was that age, because I probably wasn’t, but there are times where I wished that movies had age separations, like night clubs. The movie was exceptionally good, and the imagery was stunning, I would see it again. The only draw back was crawling into bed at 2:30 AM and having to be at work at 8 AM.

Saturday was spent catching up on much needed sleep. I got a good 12 hours in before Richard and I headed over to Toy Fusion. We saw our friends Jonny and Julie for a brief moment, sadly they couldn’t stay and hang out longer due to Jonny having to go to work – BOO! I picked up an awesome Ron English figure that I have been coveting for a while, and then we decided to go feed the ducks. We hit up the dollar store for some cheap bread and managed to buy a sizable feast of snack foods that ranged the gamut of tasty to horrible – more on that later. We managed to find a whole 4 ducks at the park to feed the loaf of bread we had to – poor guys ate like kings but will probably be stopped up for weeks. We then hit Red Robin for dinner and then hung out at my place where I slaved away on my Minecraft game.

20120613-120921.jpg
I assure you there are ducks in there – somewhere.

Sunday also got off to a slow start – both Saturday and Sunday I was nursing an excruciating migraine, which made me sadly decline hanging out with my friends Tim and Lauren. Richard came over and we decided to hit up the local auction, Denio’s. I honestly thought I was going to die from how bad my head was pounding. Nothing a little Italian food wont numb. We hit up our local Sunday pizza stop, where I foolishly deviated from my normal slice of pepperoni pizza and ordered spaghetti instead. What a mistake. Note to self – do not order that again – the marinara sauce was way too sweet. We then hit up Toys R Us where I snagged a game of Perfection, and Richard picked up 2 Lego games; Sunblock, which is a strategy game that requires you to place various sized umbrellas on a desert island until a player can no longer fit anymore on there, as well as Magikus, which is also a strategy game that requires each player to complete a potion list, but you can only draw items from the line that the owl is on. They are both pretty mindless, but fun, and being Lego allow for plenty of rule changing and customization. His new goal is to collect all of the Lego games. Maybe we can make a giant awesome game out of all of them. Truly epic. We wrapped up the weekend by hitting our beloved Asylum, where we got to hang out with our good friend Ed and dance the night away.

Toy Thursday – Double Vision

Posted in Toys by

20120531-234825.jpg

Hi all! I thought we would take a break from showcasing my collection to talk about a serious issue that faces all blind box collectors, DOUBLES. (was that dramatic enough for you?)

I think the main reason why I started collecting blind box toys was the element of surprise. I also admit, I really love to gamble. A lot. But I don’t, because I spend all my money on toys. There is something exciting when it comes to mulling over which box you are going to take (or bag if you are referring to Lego minifigs, which I also have a collection of). I would say it almost feels like Christmas morning when you are a kid. Does it rattle? Is it heavy? Compare and contrast with other boxes in the lot. As stated before, I am not a completionist. This applies to many aspects of my life such as video games, crafts, web blogs… wait. Honestly I blame it on being constantly distracted. There is usually one or two figures in a series that I want, but I also don’t usually get all gun-ho about trying to find them immediately. Usually I can find an open one online for a decent price, or lady luck will sometimes throw me a solid, that really sounds like shes throwing poop at me, and I will open up the one I’ve been lusting over.

I have purchased my fair share of blind box toys (well over 100 to date) and I can honestly say with the small exception of a mass purchase of Hello Kitty blind box toys when they went on clearance at Urban Outfitters, I am not often the victim of the blind box double. This is not to say that it doesn’t happen, as noted in my previous post when I purchased two of the Misko figures. Luckily I have friends who also collect and often just give them away, and in return I occasionally get their doubles. I would have to say that I have the worst luck with doubles when it comes to Lego minifigs. There are a couple from the series 6 collection that I have 3-4 each of, but despite my initial frustration (more comical than anything) it doesn’t bum me out nearly as much as when I buy higher priced doubles – think $3.00 vs $9.00-12.00.

I read an interesting 5 part article over at Jeremyriad recently about blind box toys. Little did I know that they were such the bane of peoples existence. I believe blind boxes fall into the same category as packs of trading cards and those awesome sticker story books that you had to buy tons of packs to complete. Sure the price tag is a bit more, but I still find that they fall into the affordable range. The element of gambling and surprise does it for me, but I understand that others prefer to obtain the piece they are looking for and move on, without shelling out dollar after dollar on other figures they don’t want. I enjoy the way that Disney handles their figures in that they have 3 (sometimes more if you ask) on display and you can trade any of yours for what they have. Is this financially reasonable for smaller mom and pop toy/art dealers? No. But sometimes it gifts me the opportunity to pick up an older figure from a discontinued series that I find interesting. For example, in the case of the Star Wars Vinylmation figures that are park exclusives, I didn’t return home to find that I had doubles, instead was able to trade them for other figures from the Star Wars series while still on vacation. I also really respect that the makers of the Ugly Doll brand decided to make their cases of blinds the entire series in one spot, instead of getting mixed cases and having to hunt them all down. I see that as a win win for everyone. It gives me the confidence knowing that even if I only plan on buying a couple, more than likely I will not end up with two of the same kind and for the die hard collector/completionists, they can simply purchase a whole case and have all of them. So I vote, bring on the blinds! I will continue to buy them as long as I find them interesting.

So friends, do you like blind box toys? Why or why not? Tell me about it!

Check back next Thursday for another edition of Toy Thursday. Rumor has it that I will be hitting my favorite place to find vintage toys in Sacramento, Toy Fusion, this weekend – and we know I can’t leave that place empty handed.

Weekend Recap – 6/1 – 6/3

20120604-121205.jpg   20120604-121211.jpg

Okay, so technically Friday is not the weekend, but for the sake of argument we will call the portion after work on Friday, the weekend. So after a drama filled afternoon at work that required me driving back to the office after arriving home just to shut the office door that clicked open and set the alarm off, Richard and I were off to a movie! We (pretty much I) decided to see Snow White and The Huntsman. We arrived just as the 8:50 PM showing started and I hate walking into a movie when the previews start, it stresses me out beyond belief. We purchased tickets for the 9:55 showing and debated on how we were going to spend our time. Parking was an absolute nightmare, so we decided to venture over to the laser tag place next door to kill some time. The video game selection is really sub-par, but we were able to dump enough money into tokens to fill the hour before the movie.

I challenged him to a match of air hockey, where I promptly whooped his ass. I have an extreme soft spot for coin pusher games, and I may or may not have been known to drop mass quantities of money into playing them. They are seriously like crack for me. I managed to stay away – go me! – and we played a couple rounds on a game that allowed you to throw ball pit balls at a tv screen to accumulate points. We cleaned house and won a nice handful of tickets (as pictured above). I picked out a few trinkets and we retreated to the bench outside of the building to watch an amazing episode of Continue? on my phone. We were both recently turned onto Continue? by a friend of ours, and if you are a fan of older video games, boobs, profanity, and all things awesome, I highly suggest that you check out their channel.

Sadly Snow White and The Huntsman fell into the category where they show all of the cool awesome stuff in the TV trailer and the rest of the movie is rather throw away. The effects in the movie were really well done. I also really enjoyed the costuming choices for all of the characters. And somehow I just turned into a girl. AWESOME. Saturday was spent helping my friend Tim and his girlfriend move their apartment. Let’s just say I am still sore. You know how your parents say things like “we had to walk to school uphill both ways…” well that was pretty much moving on Saturday. At least I got to hang out with cool people, eat delicious food, and get lots of cute Xena snuggles (their cat!) Sunday, Richard and I ventured to A-1 comics – he spent a small fortune, and I was good and walked out with just one Adventure Time comic. We also ran into our friend Ed while he was playing in the Pokemon tournament. We decided to go to Toy Fusion but they are closed on Sunday – AHHH NOSE NUGGETS – so we wandered the mall instead. We hit the Lego store and drooled over the new Lord of the Rings series, Monster Fighter series, and the huge R2D2 build. I also may or my not have acquired some of the new Disney Vinylmation figures from the 25th anniversary series – I kind of want them all *swoon* We wrapped up the night by dancing our faces off at Asylum, our Sunday ritual.

Check back tomorrow for a brand new Edible Escapades!
