While at my Mom’s house for Thanksgiving, I found myself completely lost after she decided to “rearrange” things in her kitchen. I scoured the shelves where I thought the sugar would be, and found TONS of powdered sugar. More powdered sugar than one person should own. I poked around a little more and finally gave up. Then a light bulb went off. I opened the spice cabinet and BINGO. SPRINKLES. This turned my wheat Chex into something exceptionally more exciting. Try it some time, you might not be able to stop smiling through your breakfast.

Last night Richard and I chipped away at more Lego Lord of the Rings. I swear, this is one of the THE MOST glitchiest games I have ever played. The loading ring will just spin for ages in the bottom corners of our split screens, quests will glitch out and not continue on into the story, causing us to restart the game multiple times, items don’t respawn in their established places making it exceptionally difficult to complete story lines. Dear PS3, give us an update already, I am head over heels for the LOTR franchise, but this game is borderline unplayable at times. After struggling through one minor quest portion for almost 2 hours (which should have only taken about 30 to 45 minutes) we went and had dinner at Chipotle. I honestly can’t think of the last time I had Chipotle and it was pretty good. Our friend Aaron happened to show up at the same exact time and it was nice to have some dinner company and remissness about the crazies at my former work place.

After our meal we parted ways, sadly we had not killed nearly enough time before the midnight release of Batman: The Dark Knight Rises. We wandered over to The Nugget, which is a fancy pants supermarket. Considering how much time we had before 12 AM, we started at aisle 1 and proceeded to walk up and down almost every single aisle looking at all the food stuffs. Richard picked up some crazy delicious waffle cookie things, some chips, and a bag of cotton candy for me. With all of the aisles exhausted, we decided to kill the last hour and a half or so wandering Walmart. I honestly have never been to a midnight release for a movie (on DVD) and didn’t realize that people would actually be there to buy it. We were digging around in the CD bargain bin and suddenly a bunch of people materialized out of nowhere to buy the DVD. Sadly I could not find a Huey Lewis & The News CD, which I was convinced at least a greatest hits album would be in there, gave up and wandered over to where everyone was gathered. The employee had a huge display on a pallet that he was pushing into place and one guy asked if he could just grab it and go, to which he was swiftly shut down and reprimanded that he had to wait until the pallet was on the floor. Who knew they were such DVD nazis. Anyways, Richard grabbed his copy and we ducked out of there. I promptly crashed out maybe 10 minutes into the movie. Sad.

December NaBloPoMo Topic:

Do you feel most comfortable being a leader, a follower, or a collaborator?

I feel that I am most comfortable in all of these roles in various capacities. I also feel that that answer is a bit of a cop-out, but hear me out a little. I have been a leader, follower, and a collaborator in various capacities of all of my jobs. When I started my first job, I started as a follower. I was new, inexperienced, nervous, but eager to learn and grow. I followed in the footsteps of over employees that I admired, taking direction from both my peers and superiors to improve my performance and the performance of the store I was working for. As I became more comfortable in my role, I started collaborating with leaders on various projects and ideas, which also meant taking on more responsibility and training other employees. Naturally that translated into various promotions until I ultimately landed the role of being the leader of the entire operation.

I feel that all three positions have unique rewards and challenges presented with them. In the role of the leader, you are able to make decisions that directly impact operations and employees. It gives you a position to teach, inspire, and coach others. I often find myself in the leader position, such as a school projects or a complex problem at work, because when it comes to situations like that, I am not the type to sit around and wait for everyone else to do something about it. I want to figure it out, getting done, and move onto the next challenge. Though in the position of leading, comes more responsibility, but sometimes in the end the rewards are greater.

In the role of follower, you are given the opportunity to take on someone else’s perspective with usually little or no repercussions for your actions (provided you follow instruction correctly). I often find that this role allows you to learn the in’s and out’s of the position you are in without having to worry about all the red tape. I also feel that people who start in this role before moving into a leader position (regardless of previous experience) often tend to be better leaders because they can identify more with the “followers”.

As a collaborator, this allows you the chance to both lead and follow. It can be the best of both worlds, provided the people you are working with feel the same way. I often find myself struggling with this the most because I tend to be a bit of a work-a-holic and control freak. But admitting you have a problem is the first step, right? As long as everyone feels valued and people are contributing equal amounts to the cause, being a collaborator can be a rewarding position.

I feel most comfortable evaluating what the situation calls for and assuming that role. By being flexible and dynamic, I feel that I am a greater asset to whatever goal I am working towards.

#1reasonwhy

Hello! Have any of you been following the Twitter explosion of #1reasonwhy? This was brought to my attention via an article from Kotaku. If you do decide to click on that link, prepare to be disgusted by some of the comments left on the blog. It is surprising that in this day and age that women are still fighting for equality in the gaming industry when it has been proven time and time again that we are a growing demographic. Sadly many people still see us as either the iOS gamer, cutesy gamer, Facebook gamer, or that we like Tetris. While all of this may be true, one thing is still the same. WE ARE ALL GAMERS. By breaking down what kind of games we enjoy into micro-niches, it creates unnecessary dissension between gamers as a whole.

Luckily in my life I have been surrounded by many people who have supported my love of gaming. Most notably were my Mom and aunt. My aunt and cousin were living with my parents and I for a brief time and that was when they discovered their undying love for the original Legend of Zelda. Many nights were spent watching my Mom and aunt play though various dungeons, create hand drawn maps including every secret passage, location of every time, and lists of what it took to defeat each dungeon boss. This may or may be the defining moment in why the original Legend of Zelda is one of my favorite games of all time (and have permanently inked onto my body). The neighboring kids all had NES systems and it was pretty common place to find us at each others homes playing each others various collections. Not once did I ever experience any backlash from boys about my love of gaming.

  1. Midnight hamming it up.
  2. Awesome operation Band-Aids that Richard got for me at Target. He also picked up Pac-Man ones as well!
  3. I kind of lost my mind in the 50 cent bin at A-1 comics and bought a bunch of things. I regret nothing.
  4. A really unfortunate shaped cookie from The Cookie Tree.
  5. Waiting for Wreck It Ralph to start – I honestly hate going to the movies solely based on how most people are inconsiderate of those around them. We had an entire row of teens in front of us that would not stop yelling and talking. Infuriating.
  6. People search for the most random things and some how make it to SpoilYourDinner.com
  7. Hanging out at work – lookin fancy while battling a 4 day migraine.
  8. An amazing sunset while I was pumping gas. The sunsets in Northern California have been ridiculous lately.
  9. Flavored honey sticks from the auction. I initially tried these while in Seattle and was convinced that I would never find them again. I was complaining to Richard and he informed me that there is a vendor at the auction that sells all kinds of flavored honey. I only had a dollar cash on me so I had to pick 5 out of the 20 or so flavors, which was tough, but man these are SO good.
  10. I went to my Mom’s for Thanksgiving and got to spend time with my old lady, Kit Kat. She is a lovely 18 years young and I miss her so much.
  11. Kit Kat is such a natural in front of the camera.
  12. The amazing Thanksgiving feast my Mom prepared. Two things that were not pictured though were the delicious cinnamon rolls my Dad made and homemade sugar cookies he made as well.
  13. My cute baby boy Obi Wan – He always seems to make this face when you take pictures of him, it’s like he is perpetually surprised or something.
  14. Trying to get Obi to act more naturally yields even more hilarious results.
  15. I had zero room for pumpkin pie after dinner on Thanksgiving, so I opted to have it for breakfast on Friday.
  16. A rare moment of Kit Kat and I snuggling. She will let you pet her until the end of time but hates being held, so on the rare occasions where she forgets this, it’s always nice to take advantage.
  17. I found some old yearbooks in my Mom’s living room and man I was a looker.
  18. I never pack clothes when I visit my Mom’s because I have so many still at her place. I found this really old Threadless shirt hanging out in my room and decided to rock it for Black Friday.
  19. Dutch Brothers is slowly making its way South. Look out Starbucks – my favorite coffee establishment is coming to town.
  20. I also managed to dig out my old gaming systems and brought them home with me. This included my NES, Sega Genesis, PS1 & PS2.
  21. I found a huge bag of Tamagotchis tucked away in a box as well that I brought home with me.
  22. My hair was doing incredible things while I was at my Mom’s.
  23. Kit Kat looking contemplative.
  24. The two of us hanging out. Anytime she sees that I am taking her picture she always tends to go right for the camera and rub her face all over it.

Call of Duty – Black Ops II Midnight Launch

20121113-112110.jpg

On Tuesday, Richard and I went to the midnight release for Call of Duty – Black Ops II. I feel like this was complete deja vu as I was standing in a frigid line just last week for Halo 4. The line was considerably longer for Black Ops II than Halo 4, mostly because the demographic is a bit different for the game. We have kind of created a ritual for our midnight release habits. First we head over to GameStop and finalize receipts, then head over to In-N-Out burger for delicious burgers. I seriously feel bad for anyone who does not have an In-N-Out near them. This time we decided to also stop at Krispy Kreme because our arteries did not take a big enough beating and picked up a couple of donuts.

20121113-112116.jpg

Richards custard filled donut looked rather derpy if you ask me. All of this ended up taking way less time than we expected it to, and we had no intentions of standing in line any longer than we had to because of how cold it was. The GameStop we were at shares the same parking lot with the Target that I used to work for, which was also doing a midnight release, so we wandered over there to get out of the cold and see a couple of friends. When we got there at around 11, the line was a whole 4 people deep vs the 100+ people outside of GameStop. I think these people had the right idea. I did some Christmas shopping while there (my goal is to have everything done by the end of the month and put nothing on credit cards) and we finally headed back over to GameStop to stand in the obnoxiously long line.

By the time we returned the line had grown from the side of the building almost looping the entire building. We had to stand out back in the boonies and rosemary (seriously rosemary plants everywhere!) but luckily we were only in line for about 10 minutes as the line moved really quickly. I am always saddened by how much trash people leave when hanging out for midnight releases or Black Friday – is it really too hard to pick up your garbage and throw it away 2 feet from you? It is not fair to either the employees that have to pick it up, the customers that have to navigate around it, and the other businesses in the shopping center that now have a bunch of garbage in front of their doors come 10 am. We were in and out in within minutes and back home to check out the game. Unfortunately I completely passed out before I even got to see a minute of the game play, woops.

So far I have only played the Zombie mode and its okay. I find the lack of readily available guns in some levels to be exceptionally frustrating as well as the introduction of fire. There are cracks in the ground in some levels and while I understand that if visible flames are coming from the cracks then yes, I will catch fire if I do not jump over them, but I should not catch fire if I am simply stepping over one of the cracks that does not have visible flames. Are you trying to tell me that I can not step over a crack in the ground? Stupid. As for Halo 4, we beat the campaign in 1 day and sadly have to replay through it on my Xbox so that I can get the achievements as well. Oh well.

1. Decided to rock some plain black polish for the first time in a while. My pentacle ring is from The Bead Man and my aquamarine ring was given to me for my 16th birthday.

2. Starbucks sucks at spelling my name, and so does at least half of the population so I have found.

3. Panda Restaurant feast on election night.

4. Lunch at Cafe Olivette. Their special was pepperoni mushroom lasagna, with a choice of soup or salad. I didn’t feel like having either of those so I opted for french fries.

5. Midnight loves to drink water from the tap. So cute.

6. My drive home is 37 miles – which for the most part really sucks. But there are days where I get to view amazing sunsets like this one and it’s not so bad. I actually stopped in the middle of the road to take this picture (I was on a back road, no worries).

7. Gushers for breakfast y’all!

8. Me pretending to be some sort of model at work. I was rather pleased with my hair and outfit for the day. My top is from Torrid.

9. Added some polka dots to my nails for a little fun.

10. Watching videos on YouTube with the captions turned on can be quite hilarious, demonstrated by the video of Marvo from The Impulsive Buy.

11. Yet another amazing sunset on my drive home.

12. I finally found the Pumpkin Pie Spice Pringles after searching forever! See what I thought of them here.

13. TOEJAM AND EARL ON XBOX LIVE. YESSSSSSSSS!

14. My awesome Holiday Pie from McDonald’s.
